There was an auction in Hong Kong on February 24th 2019 held by the Government to celebrate Chinese New Year and in general the rich people come out of of the woodwork and bid insane amounts of money to secure a lucky number plate.
This Chinese New Year there were 6 number plates sold for over HK$1 Million… pretty crazy huh!
This is my Hong Kong | This crazy rich Asian shelled out US$1,666,666 or HK$13 Million for this licence plate in 1994, probably worth a bit more now, 9 is an incredibly lucky number in Chinese Culture, particularly in Hong Kong.
The rich Hong Kong Chinese Businessman who owns the no. 9 plate also owns the following number plates, 29 and 9999 | clearly he has a thing about the number 9 - the main meaning of 9 in Hong Kong Chinese Culture is long life, throw in a reference to Dragons and Emperors and you soon understand why he paid such a huge amount of money to secure these licence plates.
Generally when he is out and about in his Rolls Royce he is tailed by the other 2 cars (lot’s of bodyguards) and numerous times I have seen the 3 cars in a row with the number plates 9 29 9999 - wow!
Out of these 53 plates I have photographed 22 of them, my life’s work naturally is to photograph them all as well as the licence plates 1 - 99 ( I have 53 of those)
For me the holy grail is the number 8 plate - I will probably drop dead on the spot if I actually manage to get a picture of it on the streets!!, in the meantime I will settle for the number 18 plate.
Given the nature of what I do for a living and I am on the streets all day I will get them all eventually.
Licence plates, license plates, number plates, vanity plates - no matter what you call them, it is a fascinating subject and so much part of the Hong Kong culture.
