Unreal Hong Kong in new Hollywood Movies and how they get it wrong
Hong Kong has always been a magnet for Hollywood movie makers and I am constantly amazed at how they always get it wrong and in many cases totally wrong in their portrayal of Hong Kong, reality just seems to go out of the window.
The image below (and apologies for the poor image quality) shows a still I took of the new Lara Croft movie remake.
In the first half of the new 2018 movie Lara Croft : Tomb Raider, it is set in modern day Hong Kong (ie 2016 / 2017 when the movie was shot) and there are some glaring errors which revolve around a famous Hong Kong Tourist Attraction.
Aberdeen Harbour, Hong Kong
Lara Croft travels to Aberdeen to track down the captain of a fishing boat and Aberdeen has been transported back to the early 1980’s, the infamous Aberdeen Fishing Village looks like it did back then, the reality is that it has not looked that way for 25+ years, the fishing village no longer exists, no one lives on boats anymore it was simply not real.
Interestingly in real life it is NOT legal to live on a boat in Hong Kong, there are actually just a handful of legal licenses in existence for living on any sort of boat.
She is also attacked by 3 street toughs in the “fake” fishing village who spoke perfect American English! totally unreal, street crime like that is basically non existent here and the English spoken by young kids is only by young Chinese kids attending an International School in Hong Kong and are hardly likely to be hanging around a dodgy fishing village preying on and robbing lost tourists at knife point!
.. but the worst mistake is the boat captain whom Lara Croft is looking for (see image) who pops out of his cabin wielding a rifle and promptly fires off a shot or two… not possible in real life as we basically have zero gun crime (for example we have had one gun crime in the commission of a robbery where a real gun was used since 2010) | the penalties for having a gun and being caught with one are probably the toughest in the world which is why no one risks having one.
You would be amazed at how many requests I get to take people to see the infamous Aberdeen Fishing Village which was actually made famous by a number of James Bond Movies and the mini series Noble House and trust me, it no longer exists!
I am all for movie magic and special effects but I do also subscribe to the theory that movies should be as accurate as possible
