The Noon Day Gun | Something Special

Hong Kong was a British Colony for 156 years from 1841 to 1997 and as a long time resident I still enjoy visiting “things” established in the British Colonial era and why not!

The article above gives the history of the tradition.

One thing that is not very clear is exactly when Jardine Matheson started firing the original gun (s) - I have yet to find a concise date, however it must have been in the mid 1840’s as the company was well and truly established by then and had warehouses and offices in, on and around the site of the Noon Day Gun and the Excelsior Hotel over the road., the are was called East Point and East Point Road is next to the Hotel.

The ritual of firing the gun daily was established in the early 1860’s and continues to this day.

On an average day there are perhaps 25 - 35 people attending the ceremony ( it is a difficult place to find ) which frankly is not that many but boy do they enjoy the whole spectacle and me telling you the gun is loud does not really prepare you!

I do love this attraction.

… oh by the way, the gun is a 3lb gun, this replaced a 6lb gun to reduce the noise! for those that are interested, the 6lb gun is outside the Hullett House Hotel at 1881 Heritage in TST, Kowloon.

Shaking the sticks at the Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple in Kowloon

I have written extensively about this amazing place in the past and after well over a thousand visits my enthusiasm remains undiminished! it is simply incredible and one of the very best places in Hong Kong to get a real insight into local Hong Kong Culture.

I think it is superior in every way to the “famous” Man Mo Temple on Hong Kong Island, a place I simply do not like to visit, you are basically in and out in under 10 minutes (to be fair it is a great place to get atmospheric images)

Not to put to fine a point on it, you do need a great Private Tour Guide with you when you are at the Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple to explain how and why everything happens and talk about the district you are in, just wandering around the Temple is fine but surely the point is to learn about local culture and trust me this is not something you can get from a guide book.

You know how to contact me if you want to book a high quality private tour of Hong Kong.

The Lamborghini Urus

…. oh yeah and yahoo!

This is the most utterly pointless car in the World, I mean seriously, a Lamborghini SUV? but by golly what a magnificent beast it is. I did take a picture of one in the Lamborghini showroom here a few months back but nothing beats photographing one on the streets and this is the first one I have seen out and about.

As usual seeing it was just pure luck, I needed the bathroom and I only frequent 5 star Hotels and I just happened to be passing the magnificent Kowloon Shangri La Hotel on Mody Road in Kowloon and parked there was the Urus…

oh my, what a car, I even thought the yellow paint just goes so well and what a monster it is.

Hong Kong people are all about status and this is a rare car, very rare and surprisingly no one was that interested in it, presumably unaware that Lamborghini has an SUV model.. they probably thought it was a Range Rover.. this car does 190mph by the way and is absolutely luxurious inside.

I want one and I think it is just great that people will drop a huge sum of money on a car like this, pure fun for the grown ups.

Oh my golly gosh, the simply amazing Pagani Zonda Absolute - this is a custom made car and is rumoured to be the only one of it's kind in the world and it is in Hong Kong!... oh... and yes, this is my picture, talk about being in the right place at the right time.
