Tours by Locals Hong Kong | The perfect Hong Kong Street Art Location at the Avenue of Stars.

The world famous Avenue of Stars in Hong Kong has finally re-opened in Hong Kong after being completely demolished and reworked over the past 3 1/2 years, this has been done in tandem with the complete renovation of the Hong Kong Museum of Chinese Art (which is still closed) .. both projects have been massive undertakings both by the Hong Kong Government and a private company in the case of the Avenue of Stars.

Both projects look fabulous, my beef is the off white building shown in the image below which is a ventilation shaft for the MTR (Subway) for a line that goes under Hong Kong Harbour, the building as you can see is behind the Museum of Chinese Art and literally at the beginning of the Avenue of Stars.

You have to question why the Government | MTR have not seen fit to repaint the monstrous ventilation shaft shown in this image which completely ruins everything, I mean seriously they have had close to 4 years to repaint it (an epic Bruce Lee image perhaps!) they should have let a street artist loose on it... it makes you wonder if any senior Government Official has actually stepped foot on the Avenue of Stars, it is kinda hard not to notice the ventilation shaft.

For arguments sake lets just assume over the next year 10 million tourists walk past the damn thing (not hard to imagine with 65 million visitors a year visiting Hong Kong) it is just embarrassing, the thing is massive and very, very visible, it is the perfect landscape for some awesome street art whether it be related to the Avenue of Stars or some beautiful painting related to the Hong Kong Museum of Chinese Art, I would just like someone to use some common sense and paint the damn thing, it seems a pretty obvious thing to do,

To quote my good friend Alex who does fabulous Hong Kong Street Art Tours :

“Most of the big murals in Hong Kong were painted on private walls, the Government didn’t have anything to do with it. If anything, Hong Kong was the first city in which a Government Agency systematically started taking down the mosaic works by French street artist Invader in 2014.... And this ventilation building is really not the only eyesore in Hong Kong...”

A sentiment I totally agree with, in fact many of my clients remark on how many totally run down buildings exist in Hong Kong, it is clear no one really cares about building exteriors or more importantly, no one wants the expense of painting the walls of run down apartment blocks.

You have two world class attractions on a waterfront setting with the best harbour views in the World, it is hard to believe that no one in the Hong Kong Government or our Subway Company did not have the brains to think about this and propose a creative solution…. what a bunch of morons.
