My 5 favourite 100% Electric Cars in Hong Kong
I am a pretty average photographer with a great camera and I wish I could take images like those shown on Flickr Explore or on the National Geographic website but I don’t and that’s that, so my car images are not the same as you will see on official car websites or in glossy magazine or books.
100% electric cars, gosh what a tough subject, I have always intensely disliked them, I am old school and there is nothing like the sound of a powerful and highly tuned petrol engine, some roar, some scream, some just thump and some burble but it is just a joy to listen to them.
A 100% electric engine with a huge battery - nothing but a swishy silence, so damn boring.
There is no doubt that credit must go to Elon Musk, the man is a genius and because of Tesla, pretty much all major car companies will only make Electric cars from 2030 onwards such a shame and hopefully by then someone will have invented a doohicky that can resemble perfectly the engine noise of a large petrol engine.
When Tesla arrived in Hong Kong in 2014 (only the Model S) it really shook up the car industry in Hong Kong and since then the Hong Kong Government has blown hot and cold over the whole EV concept switching between ZERO First Registration Tax and 80% First Registration Tax, (payable on newly registered vehicles) at the moment they seem very keen for you to scrap your old petrol car and purchase an EV and you cn get a large payment for scrapping the car which can be applied against the purchase of an EV… at least that is what I think it says, if you click the link above you can learn more from the official Government memo on the subject which to me is incredibly confusing to say the least, but hey they are bureaucrats.
As of March 2021 Hong Kong has roughly 11,500 (ish) electric cars out of about 650,000 cars in total so the potential market is just huge, uptake of EV’s has stalled as well due to insufficient charging facilities, a problem the Government is going to fix and it will happen.
I am looking forward to the coming year as more car manufacturers release electric cars but at the moment Tesla remains the market leader with 4 models, the S, Y, X and 3, Tesla is incredibly popular here!!
See below for more comments and my thoughts about the 5 cars I have listed.
I should really have listed the BMW i3 but it is an abomination and quite possibly the worst designed car on the roads, I shudder when one swishes by, it is like something out of a PIXAR movie….. yuk! amazing really as everyone knows I am a huge fan of BMW cars.
No. 1 - Porsche Taycan
The fabulous Porsche Taycan or as I call it, the Tesla Killer - sales of this model are soaring, it is an amazing car and unlike a Tesla which design wise I find rather bland, the Porsche is a real Porsche, it just looks the business and there is not much difference in the price between the Taycan and the Tesla Model S.
For me it is no competition at all, I just love this beast.
No. 2 - Tesla Model S
The lovely Tesla Model S, when I am not in the mood I call a Tesla a “battery on wheels” it has no history, no pedigree and no engine noise but I am insanely jealous of the cars performance - Elon Musk really is a genius, it can outperform almost any car on the road for now… but the big European Car Manufacturers are fighting back.
Tesla now have 4 models in Hong Kong and they outsell everyone who sells Electric cars but not for much longer but if Tesla can get the Tesla supercar delivered here in 2022, that will be a real boost for them
I have had quite a few rides in a Model S and as much as it was what I expected, it is still no match for the Porsche Taycan.
No. 3 - Audi E Tron
The rather large Audi E Tron and dare I say it, a rather boring car - I am huge fan of the Audi RS models, they are fabulous but this model is huge and the design is just weird from side on and that grille is just nasty… but it is still an Audi and will therefore sell well… what an odd car.
I was in the Audi showroom a few months ago and I sat in one, like I said it is an Audi I just cannot get past the awful shape and nasty grille
No. 4 - Mercedes Benz EQC

Mercedes Benz EQC
Gosh I hate that grille, I am a huge Mercedes Benz fan, huge, they make fabulous cars and I love their AMG models but the grille they put on the EQC is awful
Mercedes Benz really do make quality cars and that is a fact, they also make some of the worlds best grilles ( particularly on their 2020 | 2021 AMG models ) but what have they done with this model? that is probably the worst grille I have seen on a car it is just awful and I am betting I am not the only one that hates it…
I think later this year they will probably change the grille on their Electric cars to something that matches the heritage of the brand, I mean why didn’t they use a grille similar to the black petrol engined model shown as a contrast?
ps I thought the Audi grille was a pigs ear until I saw this one!
No. 5 - Jaguar I Pace
Not bad, not bad at all, it is all rather curious, I like the Jaguar brand, back in 1972 we had one as a family car in Hong Kong but the brand has never really caught on here, their racing cars have proper racing heritage but hardly anyone buys their splendid sports cars here which is a real shame.
The I Pace will never sell well here, I personally like it a lot, it looks like a proper Jaguar and less like a toy car, it certainly looks a lot better than the Audi, unfortunately I am pretty sure that when Maserati introduces an Electric SUV Jaguar will stand no chance….
If I was in charge of Jaguar I would give it a bigger battery and more power with blistering performance and give it 22” wheels to make it look a lot meaner, but hey what do I know, I am just a Private Tour Guide.
