The ULTIMATE list

All information regarding auction prices of licence plates | vanity plates are from the Transport Department of the Hong Kong Government who hold monthly auctions. Please assume that this comprehensive information is 100% accurate

Traditional Licence Plates have been sold by auction in Hong Kong with lucky number and letter combinations since 1973 Personalised Licence Plates or Vanity Plates have been sold by auction in Hong Kong since 2006 | I have been able to obtain 30 years of Auction data (over 2,600 pages | 140,000+ entries) | covering the time period 1990 - 2020 - apparently there is no computerised data available to the public prior to 1990, it is understood that the Licence Plate No. 8 is the holy grail in Hong Kong... it sold in 1988 for a comparatively low price. (It is position no. 18 and it sold in 1988!)

…… and while we are discussing facts and figures, since 1973 | 3,806 licence plates have sold for HK$100,000 or more (US$12,820) and that includes 103 licence plates that have sold for over HK$1,000,000 or US$128,205 - it is big business and very much a part of Hong Kong Culture.

Although I call it the ultimate list, I can now confirm this as of March 7th 2021 - after over 6 months of communication with the Transport Department I have now received all the data for licence plates over HK$1,000,000 or US$128,205 for the years 1973 - 1989!!

The Transport Department of the Hong Kong Government has a list of the top 12 most expensive licence plates, I have 103! and probably the thing I am most proud of is I have photographed 51 of those 103 cars.

Out of the records I have checked, only about 15% of that data is in the public domain to check, if that and honestly there are probably not that many people willing to go through 140,000+ entries one by one to do do a manual check, I am quite tenacious with projects like this…

The Emirates in the Middle East are world leaders in expensive car licence plates in terms of amounts paid for individual plates but I do not think there is another country on the planet that has a population that is so into lucky licence | vanity plates and their willingness to spend huge amounts of money on them, there are normally in excess of 50 auctions a year here.

I will update the list as and when new information comes out.
