My Top 5 Things to do
January 8th 2020
Since 2011, I have struggled with writing blog posts, writing does not come naturally to me and I am pretty busy and frankly most of the time I simply have other priorities .. well that is my excuse.
I am now in the 10th year of being a Private Tour Guide and after living in Hong Kong for 48 years I have decided it is time to do a more regular blog post as apparently a few people actually read the darn things and a lot of people mention to me how much they enjoy my rather large collection of images.
My new blog style will be to let my images do the talking and to spend less time worrying about SEO and that other stuff which apparently is so important when it comes to getting your message out there, I mean seriously I have spent thousands of hours on SEO over the years ( and a lot of money ) and here are the three important things I have learnt…
a competitor can set up a crappy, 3 error ridden page website, do no SEO, no blog posts, no instagram posts, in fact do nothing at all for 2 years and their website will still rank higher than mine on search engines such as Google, Yahoo etc
a competitor can simply (via Google AdWords for example) buy their way to the top of the search engine rankings no matter how good or bad they are ! I mean why bother?
Tripadvisor, do not get me started on them, they have made it all but impossible for a potential client to find your listing as they have morphed over the past 3 or 4 years into the World’s largest Travel Agent and unless you list your tours on their site and give them a huge cut you will all but vanish from the site
Despite all the negative press about Hong Kong I have decided to concentrate on the positive aspects of Hong Kong and it’s unique culture.
So….. choosing my top 5 things to do in Hong Kong
All subjective of course and they are my own choices, these days buzz words and phrases abound such as “off the beaten track” and the phrase I hate the most “hidden gems” , I think it can be an incredible waste of time to go somewhere to take one offbeat image which has been taken a million times and posted on Instagram and you have wasted 4 hours going there and back for one image….
The locations I have chosen are not one shot wonders, the views I have chosen are jaw dropping but most importantly all 5 places are very “Hong Kong” and with me ( or my friends ) as a private tour guide you will get a fabulous insight into Hong Kong Culture.

Victoria Peak (The Peak)
January 8th 2020
No. 1 | Victoria Peak, Hong Kong Island
Probably my favourite photo that I have taken, the view from Victoria Peak on a sunny day is probably the best Instagram shot you can take in Hong Kong, particularly if you are a young person!
There are numerous places to take a photo at the Peak but my favourite remains, my spot at the Peak, the fact that I have walked there (and back) over 6,000 times since 1972 tells you everything you need to know.

The Ocean Terminal Deck
January 8th 2020
No. 2 | The Ocean Terminal Deck, The Ocean Terminal, TST, Kowloon, Hong Kong
The 2nd best view in Hong Kong | the view of Hong Kong Island from Kowloon.. it is simply staggering. I know there is a similar view from TST Promenade and from the Avenue of the Stars but trust me, this one id better and it is almost always deserted, I guess people cannot be bothered to walk 10 minutes through a shopping mall.
Again, a brilliant Instagram shot.

The Tai O Fishing Village
January 8th 2020
No. 3 | The Tai O Fishing Village, Tai O, Lantau Island
It takes a while to get there by bus or taxi as it is very close to being the most westerly point you can visit in Hong Kong but boy is it worth it, I need no excuse to take my guests to Tai O, simply brilliant and so not like the rest of Hong Kong.
It is also just 15 minutes away (by bus or taxi) from the Big Buddha on Lantau Island so you do both and make a day of it.
Again, another brilliant Instagram shot.

The Chi Lin Nunnery
January 8th 2020
No. 4 | The Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden, Diamond Hill, Kowloon, Hong Kong
Actually I prefer to go to the Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple, one stop on the subway, away but it has been partially closed for major renovations for over a year now and I reckon it will not be completed until mid 2020.
So…. I make do with the Nunnery and the Garden and not for a second do I mean it like that, depending on many factors I normally have to choose between the Temple in Wong Tai Sin and the Nunnery in Diamond Hill, I love both places but quite often time works against paying a visit to both.
Again, another brilliant Instagram shot, this is the Nan Lian Garden

The Noon Day Gun
January 8th 2020
No. 5 | The Noon Day Gun, Lot no. 1, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong Island
I do quirky particularly when it relates to British Colonial Rule and long standing traditions.
I think this is a fabulous thing to do but more often than not timing works against me as it is in a rather offbeat location and yup, it forces me to be in an exact location at 12 noon, being 3 seconds late means a wasted journey… but it is absolutely 100% worth the effort.
Simply brilliant.
