The Chi Lin Nunnery in Diamond Hill, Kowloon, Hong Kong
It is indeed a lovely place, and to quote the usual cliche it is a "little oasis in a downbeat neighbourhood" which sums it up rather nicely....
Diamond Hill (and neighbouring Choi Hung) is mainly comprised of large Public Housing Estates a smattering of middle class apartment blocks and a large Industrial area so the Nunnery / Garden is just a little out of place.
I always go in the early morning (looking to arrive at around 9.30am) as you have more of a chance of spotting one of the people shy Buddhist Nuns at the Nunnery... actually the head Nun (Abottess I believe) is normally in the main hall reading at that time.
If you like peace and quiet and if you like beautiful gardens and bonsai trees then the Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden should be a priority.

Looks fabulous in heavy rain! - The Chi Lin Nunnery in Diamond Hill
Ahhh... the Hong Kong summer and yes, it can rain very hard between May and September in Hong Kong with a couple of inches of rain in a few hours being quite normal.
This should not deter you from visiting the Nunnery, it is one of those places that actually looks great in a violent rainstorm (probably all those earth tones) and there are plenty of places at the Nunnery to shelter and feel the ambience of the place. In the main section shown in the image, the design of the roof allows for waterfalls to cascade down, it all looks pretty dreamy.
...and you should know that in the 2 gift shops at the Nunnery they have some great umbrellas on sale, the large umbrella is very solid and very large, great quality as well, I can heartily recommend it.

The Nan Lian Garden attached to the Chi Lin Nunnery
Please remember to visit the Nan Lian Garden which is attached to the Nunnery - you basically walk over a bridge to get to the Garden.
The Nan Lian Garden which opened in 2006 is simply magnificent and very photogenic, it also has a gift shop, a Koi pond, a snack shop and one of the best veggie restaurants in Hong Kong and I love it.
The orange bridge (which the Nunnery claims is red!) with the gold leaf Pagoda behind it is really a fabulous place to take a photograph as you can see from the image above.
On a negative note I am always dismayed by the lack of seating in the garden, it always feels that the Management want you to shop at the gift shop, buy a snack and leave as fast as possible... it really is the sort of place you could just sit for hours in.
There is seating available but not nearly enough and watch out for the security guards, they get quite crabby if you eat and / or drink in the garden - only water can be consumed in the Garden.
I am more than happy to include the Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden in the itinerary of one of my award winning private tours of Hong Kong.
Oh my golly gosh, the simply amazing Pagani Zonda Absolute - this is a custom made car and is rumoured to be the only one of it's kind in the world and it is in Hong Kong!... oh... and yes, this is my picture, talk about being in the right place at the right time.
