April 6th 2020 | The view from Victoria Peak (The Peak) in 2020

The Peak - Officially Victoria Peak, Hong Kong

I love looking at images from the 1970’s when I was a kid here and comparing them to today, it is simply astonishing how much has changed in almost 50 years!

I almost got the same angle as well with my image compared to the one from 1976.

The Peak | Locally called The Peak, officially called Victoria Peak but administratively it is called Mount Austin, 552m or 1,811 ft in height, historically home to the very wealthy since the late 19th Century, US$100 Million + homes are very common, the most expensive house (The Pink House on Pollocks Path) sold for US$410 Million in 2017. (Now demolished)

Fabulous views of Victoria Harbour and the City are why The Peak should be your number 1 priority to visit and it is served by the iconic Peak Tram ( Funicular Railway ). The highest viewing point for the iconic city view is from the Peak Tower (428m or 1,400ft) and roughly the same for a point on Lugard Road which circles The Peak.

The most astonishing Hong Kong city view is from a very specific point on Lugard Road roughly a 20 minute walk from the Peak Tower (ish), closely followed by a specific point on Barker Road, spectacular views can still be had from the Peak Tower (requires payment) the Peak Galleria (free) and the Lion’s Pavilion (free) - there is NO city or harbour view from Victoria Peak Garden.

... and did I mention the night view of the City? On a clear night the view from any location mentioned above is quite staggering, it takes your breath away.

The best views occur in the Hong Kong summer from May to September with beautiful clear and sunny days particularly in July and August and naturally it is 32oC ish (90oF) with 90% humidity! Autumn and winter in Hong Kong can be grey, cool, cloudy and smoggy and spring can be humid and very foggy - bear in mind even on grey cloudy days it can still be very clear at The Peak.

Crazy, funny signs in Hong Kong

April 6th 2020 | The magical, crazy, funny signs in Hong Kong

I have a large collection of images of signs here, ok, not all of them are funny but every now and then you get one that brings tears to your eyes.

What is a little worrisome is clearly this building has had a problem with people pooing and peeing in the lobby, stairwells etc, public area’s and such, the mind simply boggles at the thought of why people would do that in a civilised place such as Hong Kong and in the common area’s of a building?

Logically, they would not put the sign up if it wasn’t a problem and I do love the imagery.

Oh well

The Crazy Rich Asian Lifestyle

of a Billionaire in Hong Kong

April 6th 2020 | The Billionaire lifestyle in Hong Kong

……and why wouldn’t you have a stable of fine and exotic cars to go with your extravagant lifestyle? I have zero issues with people living it large, I day dream about doing that all the time.

  • Rolls Royce Phantom on the left with the licence plate KASU

  • Bentley Continental in the middle with the licence plate KASU I

  • Ferrari 458 on the right with the licence plate KASU II

Yes, all three cars are owned by the same family or so I am told (I am not so sure) but if my source is correct then 3 cars is probably the tip of the iceberg, some families have between 8 - 12 cars.

The lady and the young lady with the Rolls Royce Phantom had just stopped by for lunch at the Four Seasons Hotel, the Bentley was just about to turn into the Hong Kong Country Club (and I love the death stare from the lovely young lady in the passenger seat) and the Ferrari was parked at the Peninsula Hotel.

I have seen all three cars frequently at the Four Seasons Hotel, the young lady in the Bentley normally drives the Ferrari, she is a very skilled driver, those are not an easy car to drive for just anyone.

Scooter Ladies in Hong Kong

April 6th 2020 | The ladies who ride scooters in Hong Kong

Times are changing

I was looking at my scooter images from 2014 and 2015 and then compared them to 2019 and 2020, times are changing, there are a lot more young ladies riding scooters and a lot more are pillion passengers and the designs are either getting very retro (think Vespa) or are getting much bigger than motorbikes (like the Forza above), quite fascinating actually, the young lady looks very cool.

My parents were MODS in the UK in the 1960’s and apparently had a Vespa!

I am actually not a fan of scooters at all, a Vespa does not stack up to a Ducati or a Harley but a scooter is perfect for young ladies I guess…. anyway, I do enjoy my scooter photography particularly when there is a 214mph Lamborghini Aventador stuck behind the scooter! The rather odd building on Wellington Street

April 6th 2020 | The weird building at 75 - 77 Wellington Street, Central, Hong Kong

If you travel the Mid Levels escalator in Hong Kong you need to get off and look at the streets below before going to the next level.

That weird building with shiny gold dragons on the walls really is quite something and someone 10 years ago told me it was a front for a secret society like the Triads, I was a little sceptical but it made for a great little story, fast forward 10 years and I decided to put the image on my blog and I asked my Private Tour Guide friends if they knew the purpose of the building, within 2 minutes my friend Stephanie came back with the answer, it is actually a Taoist Temple in a commercial building (not exactly common but we have plenty of religious organisations in commercial buildings) and a welfare organisation.

Clearly the welfare organisation is a front for a major Triad organisation hiding in plain sight! If you did not know the modus operandi of the Triads is similar to the Mafia.

Now I know.

ps. the building at street level is also home to Mak’s Noodles, a rather famous eatery, you should stop by and have a bowl of noodles and dumplings.
