March 29th 2020 | The awesome house at 60 Peak Road, the Peak, Hong Kong

Kingdom of Morocco House, 60 Peak Road, The Peak, Hong Kong

I have stood outside this house a few times over the years much to the angst of the security guard | rent-a-cop in the booth just to admire the size and beauty and to day dream about me and the wife living here, I mean all of that space!

This is the magnificent house at 60 Peak Road, the Peak, Hong Kong with a quite fabulous driveway and the house is not to shabby either! I cannot find any information on how much the house is valued at but at a guess, this is at least a US$175 million to US$200 million house.

There is a lovely sign on the gate as the house is listed as the address for the Honorary Consul of Morocco, the King of Morocco has been to Hong Kong recently so there is speculation that he is the owner of the house, however the chap that lives there is a very powerful and well connected and obviously very wealthy Hong Kong Chinese Businessman, so I believe he is the owner!

No matter who owns the house, it is really quite magnificent.

March 29th 2020 | MTR (Subway System) Tunnel Ventilation Shaft | Avenue of Stars Hong Kong + Hong Kong Museum of Art, TST, Kowloon, Hong Kong

The Power of the Pen

Sometimes you just have to write a letter to the newspaper.

Please look carefully at image 2 above and read the contents of a letter I wrote to the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, our venerable English Language Newspaper in 2019.

In a nutshell, tens of millions of US$ were spent on renovating the Hong Kong Museum of Art and revitalising the very popular Avenue of Stars and someone in the Government forgot to liaise with the MTR Corp ( the Subway Company ) who since 1980 have not bothered to maintain the exterior of the giant ventilation shaft in front of the Museum of Art and next to the “entrance” to the Avenue of Stars, it looked awful… it’s not like a couple of large tins of paint is going to cost a lot of money.

We have a pass the buck style of Government where almost no one will take personal responsibility.

Actually, this is quite normal in Hong Kong, many older buildings never get a lick of paint and are simply left to rot because the owners of the buildings are cheapskates and do not want to incur the cost of repainting a building, interesting the Government has been running a scheme called “Operation Building Bright” whereby they choose a bunch of decrepit old buildings in a poor neighbourhood and give them a lick of paint.

Imagine my surprise when I saw a few days later a letter from a District Councillor on Hong Kong Island vowing to do something about the ventilation shaft eyesore and then my total shock when a couple of months later, the MTR Corp actually repainted the ventilation shaft and it looks so much better.

The power of the pen.

ps. they still should have hired some great street artists to paint Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris on one side of it!

March 29th 2020 | The joys of being a Private Tour Guide

Things happen.

I was with a guest walking along TST Promenade down at the waterfront looking across to Hong Kong Island from Kowloon, I was in the zone, busy waffling away (as I am prone to do) when I actually walked right into this rather lovely young lady!

Apparently she is a Chinese model based in the USA and her and the people she was with (Americans) were scouting for a location for a photo shoot.

I carry my camera with me at all times and she very graciously allowed me to take her picture.

I do lead an interesting life.

Street Art or Egg Tarts?

March 29th 2020 | The head scratching popularity of City “Instagram” spots in Hong Kong

I am way beyond young and pretending to understand how they think and I simply do not get why hordes of young Asian female tourists (in the main) flock to this location to take an “Instagram shot” of essentially a wall of graffiti. I am not a huge fan of graffiti mainly because these days it is protest related graffiti put on the walls by kids who can’t spell and have zero artistic ability.

This is the junction of Graham Street and Hollywood Road on Hong Kong Island, it is easy to get to via the Mid Level Escalator or a rather trying walk uphill via Wellington Street and Lyndhurst Terrace from Central and frankly stopping at the Tai Cheong Bakery 1 minute from this location is much more interesting as their egg tarts are the epitome of iconic!, just follow the duck lipped pouting girls

The picture does not do the scene justice, the whole area is full of one way traffic and there is a stream of cars and trucks going up Graham Street 24/7 and yet these kids risk life and limb to get the perfect pouting shot of them next to a wall of not very good street art!

It is not just this spot, we have 20 to 30 famous spots where people will travel a couple of hours there and back for a single image, I am not quite sure that they understand that people get really bored seeing the same pose, pouting lips, SUPREME cap and background 257,465,111 times.

…….. and if you do not believe me about the pouting, type “pouting girls on Instagram” and 2.4 million results pop up.

Oh well, but what do I know, I am just a Private Tour Guide.

March 29th 2020 | Mr. and Mrs. Harley Davidson at the Hong Kong Country Club, Island South

It is still a thing here, warm sunny Sunday, get out the Harley, spot of lunch at the Country Club and then a gentle drive through Deep Water Bay, Repulse Bay and onto Stanley, I think it is just brilliant and a great way for couples here to unwind after a busy week making money.

….. or you could skip lunch at the Country Club and take the bus to Stanley!
